« Help!| Main | More Than Half Of Uninsured Americans Cannot Afford Coverage And Are Not Eligible For Public Programs»

The New York Times is reporting that the health insurance industry is proposing an expansion of Medicaid and new tax breaks to expand coverage to virtually everyone within 10 years.

More than few people would argue that Medicaid is barely functional now. Witness that many physicians and hospitals refuse to take these patients because the government does not reimburse enough to even cover the cost of health care. So, without new funding mechanisms, isn't this proposal simply a way to quietly shift the cost to providers who in turn will pass it on to private insurers who in turn, will pass it to, yep, the employees paying for health insurance. What will happen then? Higher co-pays, higher deductibles, more $$ paid by working individuals. In name, we will achieve universal coverage, but will it help the U.S. achieve what should be the real goal? Universal HEALTH?

i am opposed to any universal state or fed govt socialist healthcare system that would force usa citizens into a mandatory healthcare plan against there own will without freedom of choice being involved/the democratic party should not be playing doctor with are healthcare decisions at all which is a clear violation of are civil liberties as usa citizens /just find away to get access to 46 million uninsured usa people who need it the most in a fair and equitable way /

There is no freedom of choice when there are people who can not get health care because their jobs don't offer it and because they can't afford it otherwise. There is no freedom of choice when a group of people is banned from accessing health care. There is more choice when the government offers a health care system that does not exclude anyone. Everyone gets basic health care - with a focus on prevention. If you want more than what the government can pay, you can pay for it. The people have the choice to private care/private services if they want more than what the government can provide their citizens (infertility treatments come to mind).
My family easily pays $600 a month on health care-insurance, copays, deductibles. Its ridiculous that much of that money goes to make insurance companies bigger and richer. We as a country spend a lot more money on health care expenses than any other country. We are the only wealthy country that does not provide universal health care to all of its citizens. Really, I think its a total shame.
